Janet & Rebbie on the Red Carpet for Why Did I Get Married Too

A 1/4 of all Republicans think Obama may be the Antichrist’

I know we are a music blog but this mess right here was just too crazy not to post.... just wow! ~ OP

Birthers, deathers, now, apparently, there are Antichristers on the Obama warpath.
The Daily Beast's John Avlon writes, "On the heels of health care, a new Harris poll reveals Republican attitudes about Obama: Two-thirds think he's a socialist, 57 percent a Muslim—and 24 percent say 'he may be the Antichrist.'"
Avlon, author of the book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America, offers the poll as proof that "Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party."
57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president" 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did" Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist." These numbers all come from a brand-new Louis Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.
The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."
Alibi.com blogger Erin McCullough writes, "Are you a Republican who is mostly non-crazy? (Leaving the belief that most taxes are bad aside.) Then, hey: Um, tell your fellow party members to stop being so batshit."
The blogger adds,
It's hard for Democrats to want to make concessions with sane Republicans (Olympia Snowe, and, hold on ... I'll get back to you) when dingholes like Texas Rep. Neugebauer (the latest in what's becoming a trend of grown men who yell inappropriate things at work, which I can tell you from experience is not a luxury most of us have. His shout; "baby killer") stinking up the wings.
Anyway. Craziness. There were plenty of people spouting crazy theories about Bush Jr. during his presidency, but most of those people were sitting outside of Winnings coffee, not in Congress. Sigh.
The poll seems to reveal that many Republicans share beliefs with the radical Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas. The church run by Fred Phelps has been roundly criticized for picketing funerals of troops killed in the war on terror.
AOL News recently noted,
Members of the church, most of them relatives of founder Fred Phelps, have shown up at dozens of military memorial services in recent years, bearing signs with slogans like "God Hates the USA" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers."
The tiny sect holds that soldiers' deaths are God's way of punishing America for its tolerance of homosexuals. The church's Web site also refers to President Barack Obama as the "Antichrist Bloody Beast" and calls Israel a "savage hypocritical nation of filthy

Mike Jackson Estate announces $250 million deal with Sony

LA Times Reports

Michael Jackson estate, Sony Music Entertainment strike distribution deal

The contract includes unreleased recordings, DVDs, video games and theater. It could be worth $250 million.

By Chris Lee

March 16, 2010

Administrators of Michael Jackson's estate and his longtime record label, Sony Music Entertainment, Monday announced a seven-year distribution deal for as many as 10 new Jackson projects, including unreleased recordings, DVDs and perhaps even video games, valued at as much as $250 million.

"We and Sony feel that the future for Michael Jackson is unlimited," said John Branca, a special administrator for the estate.

Rob Stringer, chairman of the Columbia Epic label group, a division of Sony, described the deal as a landmark for the recording industry. "The audio rights span across different projects," Stringer said. "There may be theater. There may be films and movies. There may be computer games -- or multimedia platforms that I don't know about today that will happen in 2015."

Jackson died in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009, of acute intoxication from the powerful anesthetic propofol as he was preparing for a series of comeback concerts in London.

Monday's deal eclipses such agreements as Bruce Springsteen's $110-million, seven-album deal with Columbia Records signed in 2005 and British pop crooner Robbie Williams' $150-million, five-album deal with EMI in 2002.

Although Sony enters into the new agreement at a time of plummeting album sales and widespread music industry contraction, sales of so-called "legacy acts" and Jackson's in particular, suggest the potential upside of the agreement. In the nine months since Jackson's death, more than 31 million of his albums have been sold worldwide (with two-thirds occurring overseas), according to a source with knowledge of Jackson's financial dealings who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Those sales and recent licensing deals have brought in close to $250 million to the estate -- easing a substantial portion of the nearly half-billion dollars in debt Jackson owed to financial institutions at the time of his death.

The Elvis Presley estate takes in between $50 million and $60 million annually through music sales and licensing deals. Jimi Hendrix's posthumously released album "Valleys of Neptune" may sell 100,000 copies in its first week of release, according to Billboard magazine.

And in addition to several recent re-releases and repackaging of the singer's CDs and movies, Frank Sinatra's estate signed a deal with Warner Music Group in 2008 to explore projects including a restaurant chain, an Old Blue Eyes-themed casino and the use of Sinatra's image to market luxury goods. The Beatles continue to thrive in the marketplace four decades after their breakup and despite the deaths of two members, John Lennon and George Harrison.

More than 60 million Beatles albums have been sold domestically since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking retail sales in 1991.

"If you look at Elvis and the Beatles, and how their brands are thriving, they only hint at what the future holds for Michael," Branca said.

Sony and the Jackson estate already have plans in place for a reissue of Jackson's multi-platinum-selling 1979 album "Off the Wall" next year that will contain a trove of new, exclusive material.

"The stuff we have in the vaults around that record is fascinating and remarkable," Stringer said. "We're going to build a whole platform with a documentary. The outtakes are fantastic! We have a lot of great stuff from around every time period (in Jackson's career). We're plowing through everything now to understand what we've got."

As well, Jackson estate co-executor John McClain -- a 40-year confidant of the entertainer who produced part of Jackson's 2001 album "Invincible" -- is spearheading the selection of an album of previously unreleased material that could hit shelves late this year.

"John McClain tells me they've got over 60 unreleased recordings that they're choosing from," Branca said. "The first album will have around 10. There's some very recent stuff and vintage stuff that deserves to be shared with Michael's fans."

Teddy Riley Working On New Jack Swing Movie?

From Vibe.Com

Fans of New Jack Swing will soon see the influential ‘80s R&B and rap music era immortalized on the big screen. According to legendary producer and New Jack Swing creator Teddy Riley, the film will detail the rise and cultural and commercial explosion of the groove-heavy, keyboard-driven sound kicked off by Keith Sweat’s 1987 landmark album Make It Last Forever. Riley’s swinging production style instantly dominated R&B and hip hop music and eventually pop with Michael Jackson.
“We are getting ready to do a movie chronicling the early New Jack Swing era,” Riley told VIBE. “It’s going to be the new millineum Krush Groove and Boyz In The Hood all rolled up in one. New Jack City (the classic 1991 street film starring Wesley Snipes) was just scratching the surface. Barry Michael Cooper, the same writer who wrote New Jack City, originally gave my music the name New Jack Swing. So Barry and I put our heads together to do this film.”
While the movie is still being developed, Riley promises an insightful look inside the New Jack Swing scene as well as the artists and industry people who made it all happen.
“We are starting the film in the ‘80s, so part 1 will be before Michael Jackson. We are covering everything from Guy and Bobby Brown to modern R&B’s first beef, which was between Guy and New Edition. It’s going to be written by Barry Michael Cooper, with input from myself and Jeff Dyson, who was New Edition’s security. The truth shall be revealed.”
However, Riley says he won’t be handling any acting duties. He’s going to leave such thespian pursuits to the professionals.
“There will be someone playing Teddy Riley, but I’ll be narrating the film,” he explains. “The [characters] of the movie are the people who helped create the movement. The real actual people won’t be in it. We’ll have some great actors to come in and play people like Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston, and Guy. This is my time to really think outside of the box. I’m doing what I never got the chance to do which is to show how important a movement New Jack Swing really was.” —Keith Murphy

L.A. Reid On The Way Out At Def Jam?

~From the NY Post~

Def Jam CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid canceled a key speech at a top music event with his staff claiming his son was seriously ill -- but he really panicked over facing questions about his future with the label, sources tell Page Six.
Hundreds of top music industry suits paid up to $1,000 each to hear Reid speak at the Billboard 2010 Music & Money Symposium at the St. Regis last week.
But hours before the talk, delegates were told that his son was in the hospital with a head injury and needed surgery. Reid has four sons, from 6 to 29 years old, as well as a daughter, 8.
"There was speculation among other music executives that this was not entirely the truth. Reid didn't want to answer questions about his future with Island Def Jam," a source said. "The move left organizers panicked with no speaker with just hours to go. Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff agreed to stand in."
The Post's Peter Lauria reported last month that R&B impresario Reid is under pressure to break a cold streak following the promotion of Lucian Grainge to CEO of Universal Music Group, which owns Island Def Jam. Following disappointing sales from artists including Rihanna and Mariah Carey, Reid has been ordered to rein in his spending and bring in a hit.
A friend of the dapper Reid -- one of the most powerful men in the US music business -- told us, "L.A. had to cancel because he was called away on family business, not because his son was ill. That was just a story that went around. He isn't afraid to answer questions about his future with the label. He is about to sign J.Lo [Jennifer Lopez] and isn't going anywhere."
A rep for Island Def Jam said, "It was unfortunate, but he was called out of town on personal business and hopes to be able to participate in a future symposium." Billboard declined to comment.
