Video of the Day: The Deele - Two Occasions

Since we're talking about L.A. how about a little Deele flashback for our video of the day ~ OP

L.A. Reid On The Way Out At Def Jam?

~From the NY Post~

Def Jam CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid canceled a key speech at a top music event with his staff claiming his son was seriously ill -- but he really panicked over facing questions about his future with the label, sources tell Page Six.
Hundreds of top music industry suits paid up to $1,000 each to hear Reid speak at the Billboard 2010 Music & Money Symposium at the St. Regis last week.
But hours before the talk, delegates were told that his son was in the hospital with a head injury and needed surgery. Reid has four sons, from 6 to 29 years old, as well as a daughter, 8.
"There was speculation among other music executives that this was not entirely the truth. Reid didn't want to answer questions about his future with Island Def Jam," a source said. "The move left organizers panicked with no speaker with just hours to go. Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff agreed to stand in."
The Post's Peter Lauria reported last month that R&B impresario Reid is under pressure to break a cold streak following the promotion of Lucian Grainge to CEO of Universal Music Group, which owns Island Def Jam. Following disappointing sales from artists including Rihanna and Mariah Carey, Reid has been ordered to rein in his spending and bring in a hit.
A friend of the dapper Reid -- one of the most powerful men in the US music business -- told us, "L.A. had to cancel because he was called away on family business, not because his son was ill. That was just a story that went around. He isn't afraid to answer questions about his future with the label. He is about to sign J.Lo [Jennifer Lopez] and isn't going anywhere."
A rep for Island Def Jam said, "It was unfortunate, but he was called out of town on personal business and hopes to be able to participate in a future symposium." Billboard declined to comment.

    Zap2 Reports

Toni Braxton fans, you can breathe again. Reports say Bravo has just inked the deal on the reality series featuring the singer.

Braxton mentioned the show, currently titled "Braxton Family Values," on the 2010 Grammy red carpet. Reports now say the contract has been signed.

The show will premiere in the fall, Sister2Sister Magazine

Reports say the show will also feature Braxton juggling the resurgence of her singing career with her responsibilities to her family. It will be interesting to see how her current separation from husband Keri Lewis of Mint Condition will factor into the show (if at all).

    R.I.P. Teddy Pendergrass

We have lost yet another legend... Theodore DeReese Pendergrass passed away last night at the age of 59. Many younger R&B fans may not fully realize the impact of Teddy P ... while it may not be as obvious as a Michael Jackson, make no mistake Teddy left a mark that will last long after his passing. From his days with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes to his ladies only solo shows ... Teddy Pendergrass will always be remembered as a shinning star of the soul scene of the 70s and early 80s. R.I.P. Teddy P ... your voice & style will never be forgotten.

We Remember Teddy Pendergrass: Soul singer dies in Philadelphia.

    (January 14, 2010)

*On Wednesday, Teddy Pendergrass, considered by many as the ultimate male soul singer died in Philadelphia at the age of 59.
The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father passed away at a hospital in suburban Philadelphia. The singer underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery," his son said.
"To all his fans who loved his music, thank you," his son said. "He will live on through his music."
Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down in the 1982 car accident. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to recording the next year with the album "Love Language."
Although he is best known for his soulful singing and passionate love ballads, Pendergrass got his start as a drummer and in 1969 hooked up with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
By 1971 he had become the face and voice of the group which had signed with legendary producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff at Philadelphia International Records.
The Blue Notes scored smashes such as "The Love I Lost," "Yesterday I Had the Blues" and "Wake Up, Everybody."
It was inevitable that Pendergrass would go solo and did in 1976. And according to his website (www.teddypendergrass.com) he became the first black male singer in history to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums.
After playing to sold-out shows around the globe, tragedy struck in 1982 when he lost control of his Rolls-Royce and crashed in Philadelphia, resulting in severe spinal chord damage and paralyzing him from the waist down.
"They don't fill you with hope after something like this," Pendergrass told the Philadelphia Daily News in 2007.
"They tell you that your life is going to be shorter, but they don't know by how much."
The singer spent six months in a hospital after the accident but returned to recording the next year with the album "Love Language," Philly.com reported
In 1985 he released "Working It Back," which was followed by "Joy" (1988), "Truly Blessed" (1990) "A Little More Magic" (1993) and "You and I" (1997).
Gamble and Huff, in a joint statement, said that Pendergrass was "one of the greatest artists that the music industry has ever known, and there hasn't been another one since.
"We've lost our voice and we've lost our best friend, but we're thankful for what we had," the statement read. "It was beautiful. He was one of the best."
Earlier, Huff reminisced during an interview aired on WDAS-FM about Pendergrass' first solo performance, which was at a club in California.
"That night I saw the coming of a superstar," Huff said. "When Teddy walked out on the stage, he didn't even open his mouth and the place went crazy with screaming females. He was just so dynamic, and when he started singing, he just blew them away."
Gamble noted what it was about Pendergrass that drove all those ladies crazy.
"He was tall dark and handsome," Gamble said. "He had a magnetism about him. He was injured 28 years ago and hung in there a long time. He was strong as a bull."
Teddy Pendergrass is survived by his wife, his mother, a son, two daughters and nine grandchildren.

    Artist Spotlight: Dam-Funk

Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dãm-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.

As a DJ/selector, Dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it's not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups' unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.

The next phase of the Ambassador's mission is his debut album Toeachizown: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today's scene with Dãm's own original "Modern-Funk" compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records' like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought Dãm on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It's a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk.

    Artist Update: Theresa

Reunion Radio was founded two years ago on the idea of bringing together and exposing different generations of R&B lovers to music they may not otherwise hear... as well as highlighting new music by artist from 'back in the day'. It's the second part of our mission that this new feature focuses on. Starting this month Reunion Radio brings you  "Artist Update". Each month we'll pick an artist that you may not have heard from in a while... feature some of their classic songs and videos, catch up with some of their newer projects, and throw in anything else we think may inform and entertain you.

This month's Artist Update is 80s duo Theresa. The group consisted of lead singer Theresa King & keyboard player Victor Porter. Operating out of Sacramento, California Theresa & Victor were part of Jay King's Club Nouveau camp that was burning up charts and dance floors in 1986-87. Guided by soon to be super producers Foster and McElroy (En Vogue, Tony, Toni, Tone) Theresa dropped their album "Broken Puzzle" in 1987. The first single "Last Time" shot up the charts and the group looked to be on it's way to stardom. But as is all too often the case, Theresa became yet another reminder of why it's called the Music BUSINESS.

By way of Rumor Radio we are posting a recent interview with lead singer Theresa King. In this humorous and highly entertaining interview with DJ Marcus T... of Timex Social Club(Rumors)fame... Theresa speaks on her past as well as what she's got cookin' for the future.

So check out the interview above and then be on the look out for a special treat on an upcoming Reunion Radio Podcast involving some new music from Theresa.
